چکیده

The effect of target polarization fields on the bond-angle distribution following the foil-induced Coulomb explosion of CH2 + has been measured. Incorporating a detailed model description of the polarization effects and other target effects into a Monte Carlo simulation of the experiment, a good description of the various observables is obtained. In particular, the bond-angle distribution is found to agree with existing ab initio calculations.

Imaging intramolecular coulomb repulsions in multiply charged anions.

The properties of multiply charged anions are dominated by intramolecular Coulomb repulsion (ICR). Using photoelectron imaging, we show the effect of ICR on photoelectron angular distributions for a series of dianions, -O2C(CH2)_{n}CO_{2};{-} (D_{n};{2-}). The observed photoemission band of D_{n};{2-} was due to a perpendicular transition from the charged end group. However, photoemission inten...

Low-Energy (0.1 eV) Electron Attachment S–S Bond Cleavage Assisted by Coulomb Stabilization

Electron capture by the ion H3C–S–S–CH2–CH2–NH3 at either the NH3 site (to form the Rydberg radical H3C–S–S–CH2–CH2–NH3) or into the S–S antibonding * orbital is shown to be able to produce the same S–S bond fragmentation products H3C–S and HS–CH2–CH2–NH2, albeit by very different pathways. Capture into the S–S * orbital is, in the absence of the nearby positive site, endothermic by approximate...

Control and femtosecond time-resolved imaging of torsion in a chiral molecule.

We study how the combination of long and short laser pulses can be used to induce torsion in an axially chiral biphenyl derivative (3,5-difluoro-3',5'-dibromo-4'-cyanobiphenyl). A long, with respect to the molecular rotational periods, elliptically polarized laser pulse produces 3D alignment of the molecules, and a linearly polarized short pulse initiates torsion about the stereogenic axis. The...

Coulomb Explosion and Intense-Field Photodissociation of Ion-Beam H2+ and D2+

As the simplest molecule in nature, the hydrogen molecular ion provides a unique system for studying molecules in intense laser fields. In this thesis, the Coulomb explosion and photodissociation channel of H 2 and D + 2 have been investigated with 790-nm, sub-100fs laser pulses by employing a high-resolution photofragment imaging technique. Unlike most experiments, where neutral molecules were...
